Being Embodied Love: A Life Like Jesus’

So you’re probably sitting there wondering, “What does embodied love even mean?”
Let me explain a little bit behind this name and and what that means for your life.

The simple truth behind “Embodied Love” is this: Jesus was the physical incarnation of love. And if we are made in His likeness, that makes us embodied love.

So, in essence, Jesus is embodied love. am embodied love. You are embodied love.

And that’s a beautiful truth because it brings so much hope into our everyday lives. In Genesis 1:27 it tells us that God created human beings in His likeness. And if God is communicating this to us right off the bat, in the very first chapter of His holy Word, then I’m going to bet it’s something that He thinks is pretty dang important, and something we should probably spend some time thinking about and studying.

Realizing that we are embodied love changes things.

I mean think about it, Jesus knew exactly who he was. With every ounce of his being he knew Who made him and what he was made for. He lived in the truth that he was embodied love every day of His life, and he changed the history of the world forever.

In John 14:12-14 Jesus says, “Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.”

Did you catch that?! Jesus just told us that we are going to do greater things than anything he did during his lifetime! The first and truest form of embodied love is telling us that we can not only do what he has done, but that we can accomplish even more.

The one who changed the world is telling us that we will do greater things than he.

And I don’t know about you but that gives me hope. That makes me want to live my fullest life. It makes me want to live outside of myself and give to others the love I have received. It makes me want to change the world and tell the people around me that they are embodied love and that they can do great things, because Jesus said so himself.

And so you may be thinking, “Okay, that sounds awesome, but how do I practically live that out?”

Well, here’s the thing.

Living like Jesus doesn’t exactly fit this world’s standard of practical.

And that’s often why it’s so hard for us to live our lives like him. Because living like Jesus isn’t practical. Nothing, really, about Jesus was practical. No one travels from city to city preaching about God the Father, with no set home, no friends to “sponsor” their travels, and no set plan when arriving somewhere new. Because it’s not practical.

So trying to tell someone how to practically live like Jesus is hard, because he, in his very nature, was not practical. But that doesn’t mean we should throw our hands up and walk out of the room, because God doesn’t want us to give up.

But here’s some good news, we don’t have to do exactly what Jesus did to be like him.

We don’t have to live a crazy life of creating disciples and preaching the Gospel in crowds everywhere we go. We don’t have to turn water into wine, and we don’t have to wear what he wore, eat what he ate, or talk how he talked. But we can be like him by pursuing his heart. By striving for the character of God in our everyday lives.

Galatians 5:22-23 tells us that “the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.”

And that is how we can live like Him. Through relationship with our Father and a deep understanding of the movement and importance of the Holy Spirit in our lives. By chasing after the characteristics of the fruit of the Spirit. Only then can we truly live out what it means to be embodied love.

So pick up your Bible and re-discover who Jesus is. Not what he wore or what he ate or where he traveled (although those are interesting and important things to study for other reasons), but rather what he is like. Read through the Gospels and analyze how each description of Jesus aligns with the fruit of the Spirit that the Bible talks so highly about. Enter into a relationship with Him and discover how you can fully be embodied love in your workspace, education, and friend groups.

When you discover your potential to be embodied love, you can change the world, just like Jesus did.
